National Preparedness Month was created in 2004 and sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Department of Homeland Security to encourage people to prepare homes and businesses for emergencies. The outreach informs and educates the public on responding to emergencies, including natural occurrences and terrorist attacks.
September was chosen as the National Preparedness Month following the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York. Each year it is proclaimed by the President of the United States.
