DESCRIPTION:
The Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, is said to have been born on this day in 20 BC, making her approximately 20 years old when she gave birth.
The date comes from the Protoevangelium of James. On this day, Catholics, Syrian Christians, and Ethiopian Orthodox Christians attend church for mass. The best grapes of France are brought to the local church for blessings.
The Virgin Mary is esteemed in the Christian and Islamic faiths. Both faiths revere her as the highest example of motherhood, believe in the immaculate conception, and recognize her as the Mother of Jesus Christ. Jesus is believed to be the messiah in Christianity and heralded as a great prophet in Islam.
