The US and Iran's first diplomatic meeting in 35 years (Persia) happened on September 26, 2013.
The two nations dissolved diplomatic ties after the Shah's overthrow and the US Embassy's seizure in Iran by student radicals in 1979. The United States CIA and British MI-6 had led a coup in 1953, which overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. At the time, Iran was one of the region's most progressive, pro-Western nations and considered a bridge between Europe and Asia.
With the installation of the Shah in Iran, the people's mood toward the west changed. He was a repressive and ostentatious leader and engendered hatred in his people. Leading up to and upon his overthrow in 1979, political leanings in the region moved in an anti-West, anti-American direction. The most notable manifestation of this was the arrival of austere, highly conservative interpretations of Islam becoming the norm throughout the Arabian Peninsula and Persia in both Shi'a and Sunni nations.
In May 2018, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the treaty agreed to with Iran, resulting from this historic meeting. In 2022, the nations of Europe, Iran, and the United States seek to repair and reinvigorate the treaty that Iran obeyed and the United States violated.
