About Peculiar People Day

On Peculiar People Day we are encouraged to appreciate and honor differences, and seek out the peculiar souls whom surround us, even those we ignore, mock, or dismiss. It is a day to celebrate what makes each of us unique.
It’s possible this day was created to honor an anniversary within the religious movement known as Peculiar People, Plumstead Peculiars or Banyardites. This phrase derives from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament.
The protestant sect was created by James Banyard in the mid-nineteenth Century and was known for its pacifism and rejection of modern medicine.
Today the church is found under the Union of Evangelical Churches.
