DESCRIPTION:
US Air Force Day marks the anniversary of the establishment of the Aeronautical Division by the US Army Signal Corps. The Aeronautical Division was responsible for ballooning and other aerial objects.
The first airplane used by the US Signal Corps took off from Fort Myer, Virginia August 20, 1908.
Lt. Thomas Selfridge is the first aviation casualty. His plane crashed on September 9 of the same year.
