Ellis Island was the immigration gateway into the US on the East Coast in the late 19th Century through the mid 20th Century. Approximately 17,000,000 immigrants were admitted through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954 when it closed.
Ellis Island was reopened in the fall of 1990 and remains one of the top tourist attractions in New York City.
