Like many Eastern European and Baltic States, Estonia has endured a less than direct path to independence. On February 24, 1918 it achieved its independence from the Russian Empire, only to be annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. Fifty-one years later, this little nation, which has been populated since around 8500BC, finally achieved independence again. Today is their national day celebrating the anniversary of its first freedom.
