Chauvin Day commemorates the life of Nicolas Chauvin, a legendary soldier who served under Napoleon Bonaparte.
Nicolas Chauvin was born in Roquefort, France on this day in 1790. He became a soldier at 18. Known to be disfigured due to his war wounds since he was injured 17 times, he was awarded with a Sabre of Honor and 200 francs pension. Known for his zealous loyalty to Bonaparte, he became a subject of ridicule when Bonaparte lost his power and influence. Researchers cannot prove whether Nicolas Chauvin is a real historical figure.
The word chauvinism was derived from his name. Originally referred to as strong patriotism, chauvinism later would refer to strong attachment to something. Today, chauvinism most commonly refers to the behavior of men whom believe they are superior and above women.
