Roller Coaster Day marks the August 16, 1878 anniversary of the first patent for the roller coaster. It was granted to Richard Knudsen and JG Taylor. Several years later the first roller coaster would open on the Coney Island boardwalk in New York. That coaster was built by LaMarcus Thompson.
