Car crashes are the number one killer of teens in the United States and a leading cause of death in countries around the world. Youth-led campaigns like Global Youth Traffic Safety Month (GYTSM) promote safe teen driving through a peer-to-peer model.
Global Youth Traffic Safety Month (GYTSM) was formed in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to support the United Nations 2007 Global Road Safety Week. It was originally called National Youth Traffic Safety Month, but in 2011, the campaign grew to become a global effort and was rebranded as Global Youth Traffic Safety Month.
GYTSM is an annual campaign held each May, which encourages youth organizations to engage in traffic safety projects in their local communities. The campaign offers a toolkit for ideas on projects, and youth are empowered to create unique ways to address teen driver safety.
