Greenery Day is a national holiday in Japan originating from the celebration of Emperor Shōwa's birthday on April 29.
In 1989 the name of the holiday was changed from "Birthday of the Emperor" to "Greenery Day". The day is celebrated as a reason for people to commune with nature. It also acknowledges the emperor's love for plants.
In 2007 Greenery Day was moved to May 4 and April 29 was renamed to Shōwa Day.
