Windmills are national historic sites in the Netherlands. There are currently over 1200 in the country, of which 300 are occasionally still used.
Windmills have existed over 3,500 years and were used in irrigation, industry and food production. They also propelled early organs, the musical instrument that is. The type we're today accustomed to, those afforded to the Netherlands, actually originated during the golden age of Islam in the Middle East during the 8th and 9th Centuries.
Windmills have come a long way over the centuries, but their iconography continues to associated with Netherlands and other European cultures. Today is a day to celebrate their past and look forward to their future as a renewable energy source.
