The Zhong Yuan (Ghosts) Festival in China is celebrated every year on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar.
The Zhong Yuan (also known as Zhongyuan Festival by Taoists or Yu Lan Pen Festival by Buddhists) is the day on which Chinese pay respects to the deceased by offering sacrifices. It is believed that on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month all ghosts come out of hell and go to the living.
The Chinese have other festivals throughout the year that honor the dead and that include sacrifices to them, but those only include offering sacrifices to one's ancestors. During the Zhong Yuan, everyone gives offerings for the benefit of all persons no longer here.
