Although not declared a public holiday, the world observes it to emphasize the situation of refugees. In many places it is observed for an entire week.
On December 4, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 20 as World Refugee Day under Resolution 55/76 starting 2001. That year marked the 50th year of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. This celebration also coincides with the Africa Refugee Day.
Amnesty International and International Rescue Committee organize activities that include protests against detention of migrants and asylum seekers and petitions to various government organizations on the treatment of refugees in detention.
