International Day of Friendship promotes cultural peace and seeks to build connections between different communities and countries.
Paraguay was the first country to observe World Friendship Day on July 30, 1958, as proposed by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho. It is said to have originated in the US in 1919. However, Joyce Hall, the Hallmark cards founder, actively promoted this event in 1930. In 1998, Winnie-the-Pooh was designated as the Ambassador of Friendship by Nane Annan, the wife of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in an event co-sponsored by the UN Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises and hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford.
By July 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared July 30 as the International Day of Friendship.
India and the United States observe this day on the first Sunday in August and refer to it as World Friendship Day. The rest of the world celebrates it on July 30 as International Friendship Day, and the United Nations created both events. Dates of observance can vary by nation.
