July 8, 2011, marks the day the Republic of South Sudan became a state. On July 9, 2011, with support from 98.83% of voters in a previous referendum and agreement, it declared its independence from Sudan and ended the longest civil war in Africa.
South Sudan established Juba as its capital. Sudan borders the small country to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Uganda to the south, Kenya to its southeast, the Central African Republic to the west, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the southwest.
