International Clean Up the World Weekend occurs on the 3rd weekend of September.
Created in 1989 by yachtsman Ian Kiernan of Australia as a way to clean up Sydney Harbor, the event was initially called "Clean up Australia Day."
It soon came to the attention of the United Nations. In 1993 the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and "Clean Up the World" was launched. A tremendous success, it is estimated that 35 million people in over 130 countries participate in International Clean up the World Weekend each year.
The United Nations Environment Program and World Environment Day (another UN initiative) also support International Clean-up the World Weekend. Media contacts are the same for both events.
