In 1967 the nation-state of Israel invaded Egypt, Jordanian territory, and Syria, taking control over the Sinai Peninsula, East Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights in what would be called the 6-Day War.
On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria attacked Israel to reclaim lost territory, putting Israel on the defensive for the first time since its founding. Until this time, no nation had orchestrated the first strike on Israel.
The surprise attack led to years of animosity between the two nations, which was finally put to rest at the Camp David Accords (1978), with US President Jimmy Carter brokering peace between the two neighboring countries. Part of that agreement returned the Sinai Peninsula and control of the Suez Canal to Egypt. Israel then became the top recipient of US aid worldwide, with Egypt benefiting as the second. Peace and aid allocations have held ever since.
Today is a National Egyptian holiday commemorating the beginning of the war that would lead to reclaiming of Egyptian territory.
