Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 - April 5, 1975) was a military leader and politician who fought against communism. With the establishment of the communist government in China in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan and continued to lead the struggle against communism until his death in 1975. Chiang Kai-shek is the person responsible for the creation of Taiwan and its separation from China.
To this day, China considers Taiwan Chinese territory and does not recognize it as a state. From 1955-1979, the United States acted as a protector. With the re-establishment of relations with China beginning in 1972, the United States ended diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established them with China to preserve the more lucrative arrangement. As of this writing, only 13 countries and the Vatican continue to have full diplomatic relations with the island country.
