Origami is the art of paper folding that is associated with Japan. Paper was invented in China in 105 AD; one can assume art using folding paper was created shortly after that.
In the 6th century AD, paper made its way to Japan and Korea. It was expensive for the average person, so origami was used for special occasions and religious services.
The name "origami" literally translates to "fold paper."
The Nippon Origami Association of Tokyo created National Origami Day. It is observed in Japan each year and forms the endpoint of World Origami Days, which run between October 24 and November 11.
