Buy Nothing Day, also called Rebel Against Consumerism Day, is observed on the Friday after Thanksgiving, referred to as Black Friday, in the US and Canada. The rest of the world joins in on Saturday.
Founded by Ted Dave and promoted by Canada-based magazine Adbusters, this campaign raises awareness of over-consumerism and over-consumption.
On this day, there are protests, including cutting up credit cards. Observants refrain from shopping for 24 hours and turn off their utilities.
