First proposed by His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan in 2010, World Interfaith Harmony Week was unanimously adopted by the United Nations in October of that year, with the first observance in February 2011.
Following in the footsteps of The Common Word initiative, this week brings together Muslim and Christian leaders to engage in a dialogue based on two common fundamental religious commandments; Love of God and love of a neighbor. Both ideals are at the heart of the three monotheistic religions (Christianity, Islam, and Judaism) and provide the most solid theological ground possible. The event has grown to include members of other faiths, including Jewish, Buddhist, Sikh, and Hindu, as well as those without faith.
