Like many societies, the Bengalese seek to preserve their language and heritage. Student protesters were killed on this day in 1952 when Urdu was declared the official language of neighboring Pakistan. Ultimately Bengalese won the right to speak and have their language (spoken by over 250 million people) as the official state language.
