DESCRIPTION:
Founding Day in Saudi Arabia marks the anniversary of Imam Muhammad bin Saud assuming power in Diriyah on February 22, 1727, creating the first city-state on the Arabian Peninsula and ushering in the House of Saud dynasty. Attempts to unite all the tribes of the region into a cohesive nation would occur several times until, on September 23, 1932, King Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Faisal Al Saud succeeded, creating what is today Saudi Arabia. Oil would be discovered in Dhahran in 1938.
The holiday acknowledges the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s deep historical culture and civilizational and its initial achievement at unity, stability, and prosperity. Founding Day originated with a Royal Decree in 2022 and is a national holiday.
