Today is the anniversary of the aquatic clothing style that has enchanted men and terrified women into dieting for nearly five generations.
The bikini premiered on July 5, 1946; designed by Frenchman Louis Réard; he marketed the tiny swimsuit as 'smaller than the world's smallest swimsuit.'
It is called "bikini" because it exploded into the market. At the time, nuclear tests were being conducted at Bikini Atoll.
