This day is the official start of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere, or the summer solstice. During this time in the northern hemisphere, the sun is situated higher in the sky and the angles of the rays of the sun hit directly the earth. Many festivals are associated with the summer solstice.
The word solstice comes from the Latin word solstitium, which basically means to stop the sun. The zenith of the sun during this time reaches the most northern part of the earth and veers away from the Equator. This makes the northern hemisphere experience warmer months.
