Introduced as French Fried Potatoes in 1856 in the E. Warren book "Cookery for Maids of All Work," French fries originated in Belgian. French fries, deep-fried potatoes cut into strips, are known by different names and are often served with mustard, ketchup, or mayonnaise. Their name comes from soldiers. Upon arriving in Belgium during WWI, American soldiers tasted Belgian fries and called them French fries, reflecting the official language of the Belgian Army, French.
