Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is a genetic illness that affects the lung or liver at various stages in one's life. Essentially, it is a protein produced in the liver. This protein protects lung tissue by dissolving damaged/aging cells and harmful bacteria, promoting the ability to breathe.
Identifying this disease early in patients is essential to promoting a long and healthy life for those with it. This month is an awareness campaign to alert the public, make treatments known and encourage people to get tested.
