D. Hamilton Jackson was a civil rights advocate and educator in the Danish West Indies. Of African descent, he fought tirelessly for the right to free speech. On September 1, 1915, he achieved his dream by inauguring the island's first press. Independence Day is also called Liberty Day on the islands.
