Holy Experiment Day marks an auspicious day in American History.
On March 4, 1681, William Penn received a charter from King Charles II of England granting Penn specifically, and the Quakers by default, sole ownership, and rule over 45,000 square miles. It later became the state of Pennsylvania.
But why 'Holy Experiment' to mark the anniversary?
The term dates back to the Quaker movement in the United States. Upon arriving in the New World, their objective was to create a faith-based community where they could live their lives according to the tenants of their faith. The first settlement they founded was Salem in 1675, and that experiment went a little array with the infamous Salem Witch Trials. With the receipt of land from the King, the center of the Holy Experiment moved to Penn's Woods or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on this day in 1681.
