International Women's Day, also known as International Working Women's Day, is celebrated on March 8th every year to promote women's rights, gender equality, and social and economic justice for all women worldwide. The day has its roots in the labor and women's rights movements of the early 20th century and has since become a global celebration of women's achievements and ongoing struggles in all spheres of life.
The origins of International Women's Day date to the early 1900s, a time when women globally were beginning to organize and demand better working conditions, higher wages, and the right to vote. In 1908, women in New York City marched to demand better working conditions and voting rights. The following year, the first National Woman's Day was celebrated in the United States on February 28th, followed by the creation of International Women's Day in 1911, sponsored by Socialist International to honor the struggles of working women and promote women's rights and social justice.
Since then, International Women's Day has been celebrated annually in countries worldwide, focusing on different themes and issues each year. These themes have included topics such as women's economic empowerment, gender-based violence, women's health, and the role of women in peace-building and conflict resolution.
International Women's Day is as a public holiday in several nations.
