Johnny Appleseed Day, one of two in the calendar, celebrates businessman, conservationist, and philanthropist John Chapman's efforts to spread apple seeds throughout America in the 18th century. He sold apple seedlings for seven cents each. He would barter apple seeds for lodging, old clothing, and shoes. If a family could not afford to purchase a seedling, he would gift it. This day marks the anniversary of his death, March 18, 1845. His obituary appeared in the Fort Wayne Sentinel on March 22.
Planting trees on their land aided settlers in attaining government recognition for their land claims.
Both settlers and Native Americans respected Appleseed. He spoke several languages, protected the environment, and was familiar with the various medicinal uses of plants.
The second Johnny Appleseed Day is in September and marks the anniversary of John Chapman's birth on September 26, 1774.
