Kindergarten Day in the United States and Germany commemorates the birthday of Friedrich Froebe (April 21, 1782 - June 21, 1852), the founder of the first kindergarten.
Froebe first conceived the idea of a kindergarten in Blankenburg, Germany, in 1837. As a teacher, he believed education is better through play and experience, easing the learning transition from home to formal school. He founded the first kindergarten that year in Germany.
Despite being popular internationally, the Prussian government banned kindergarten until 1851.
The first kindergarten in the United States opened in Saint Louis in 1873.
