Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier, nicknamed Tiradentes (tooth puller), was a dentist in the Portuguese colony of Brazil. He led an uprising against the colonizers in 1789. He was executed on April 21, 1792, and is considered a hero in Brazil. Tiradentes Day is a national holiday in the country.
