The United Nations General Assembly, by its resolution 55/201 of December 20, 2000, proclaimed May 22 as The International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The date commemorates the adoption of the text of the Convention on May 22, 1992, by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The UN General Assembly designated December 29 (the date of entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity) the International Day for Biological Diversity. However, it took a lot of work for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations on December 29; given the number of holidays that coincide, the official date was moved to May.
