National Sewing Month was created in 1982 via a presidential proclamation to honor sewing as a craft and its contribution to American culture. It was championed by the Sewing and Craft Alliance until 2013 and continues to be acknowledged by suppliers and sewing enthusiasts.
Thomas Saint created the first patent for a sewing machine in 1790. His design worked with leather. In 1840 William Newton Wilson discovered in the London Patent Office the drawings of Saint's. He improved the design and created his version. After two years, John Greenough applied for a patent in the United States, but the patent was awarded to Elias Howe, who used a lockstitch design.
At this point, Singer already had industrial sewing machines, which he sold on an installment plan to manufacturers. In 1851, he created a much smaller device for home use at a cost the consumer could afford.
