International Day of Non-Violence occurs on October 2 each year, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi (October 2, 1869 - January 30, 1948). Gandhi was the leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneered the philosophy and strategy of non-violent resistance.
According to United Nations General Assembly resolution A/RES/61/271 of June 15, 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day of Non-Violence is an occasion to disseminate the message of non-violence through education and public awareness.
