African-American Poetry Day marks the anniversary of the birth of Jupiter Hammon of Long Island, New York, in 1711.
Hammond was the first African American to publish poetry in the United States. At the time, the United States was still a colony of England, and slavery was in force.
Hammon opened the door and opportunities to future black poets, including Maya Angelou, Rita Dove, Claude McKay, Imamu Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, and Langston Hughes.
