Pony Express Day marks the anniversary of the creation of the Pony Express on April 3, 1860.
The first Pony Express sped the delivery of mail in the American West. It consisted of two horse and rider relay teams. The teams simultaneously left Saint Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California.
Only ten days later, on April 13, the westbound rider completed his task and delivered the mail packet after an approximately 1,800-mile-long journey to Sacramento. He beat the eastbound packet's arrival in St. Joseph by two days and set a new standard for mail delivery.
Eventually, the railroad would replace the pony express riders, but their contribution to history in the Old West remains entrenched in Americana and the romance of that era.
