International Dark Sky Week (IDSA) is an Astronomy event organized by the International Dark-Sky Association.
The mission of the IDSA is to protect the night skies in the present and for future generations against light pollution and its negative effect on nocturnal birds and animals. Excess light during the night has the potential to destroy entire ecosystems. Additionally, much of the light used to illuminate cities is unnecessary, thus a waste of energy.
High school student Jennifer Barlow created this event in 2003. It occurs during the week encompassing the new moon in April.
