Created by a congressional resolution, National Yellow Ribbon Day highlights the historical significance of the yellow ribbon symbol, first used in the United States to promote national unity and remembrance of the Americans held hostage in Iran. The resolution also notes that yellow ribbons were used to promote solidarity for US troops during the Persian Gulf War and that April 9th has been designated Yellow Ribbon Day in New York State since 2006.
