Today is the anniversary of the highest recorded wind gust felt by man in history, a record that stood for 62 years until 1996.
It was in Mount Washington, New Hampshire, on April 12, 1934, that a wind gust of 231 miles per hour was recorded by staff at the Mount Washington Observatory.
In 1996, during Typhoon Olivia, an unmanned station on Barrow Island in Australia clocked a wind gust at 253 miles per hour.
Mount Washington continues to hold the record for the fastest wind gust experienced by man. The Barrow Island gust was recorded by machinery, not man.
