Antigua Sailing Week started in 1968 when friends and hoteliers got together to hold a regatta (sailboat or yacht race).
Antigua Hotel Association sponsored the first Antigua Sailing Week, which occurred June 8-15, 1968.
Festivities included a three-day ‘Lord Nelson Regatta’ with sailing yachts of up to 135 feet in length, power boat races, deep sea fishing, and Sunfish sailing contests. There was also a two-day race among Antigua’s workboat fishermen.
The inaugural Antigua Sailing Week was a huge success and repeated the following year, with dates moved up to May 31 through June 7, 1969. And so it went each subsequent year, with new sponsors coming on board and the program of events growing and evolving.
