Bowdler's Day in the UK celebrates the life and achievements of Thomas Bowdler (July 11, 1754 - February 24, 1825).
Bowdler was a physician and a philanthropist, best known for publishing "The Family Shakespeare," an abridged edition of William Shakespeare's work, edited by his sister, Henrietta Maria Bowdler. The editing was censored words and ideas deemed inappropriate for women and children at the time.
"History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and parts of the Old Testament of the Bible round out his notable works. Bowdler may be considered the original Cliff Notes, cheat sheets cherished by high school and college literature students!
