On July 22, 2011, Utoeya Massacre occurred. Carried out by Anders Behring Breivik, the sequential attacks targeted the children of the government and business elites, ultimately claiming 77 lives.
There were two attacks. The first exploded in the governmental office area in Oslo, killing eight and injuring hundreds. The homemade bomb made of fertilizer and fuel oil was parked near the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. It was a diversion to corral first responders away from his prime target, the children.
The second attack occurred two hours later at a summer camp on the island of Utoeya. Breivik, wearing a police uniform and showing falsified identification, opened fire, killing 68 children and staff and injuring 110 people. The 69th victim died in a hospital of injuries.
On August 24, 2012, Breivik was sentenced to 21 years of preventive detention.
