Sidi Mohammed ben Yusef, Sultan Mohammed V of Morroco, was exiled on this day in 1953 by the French colonial authorities. The Morrocan people rose in protest and took to the streets. Their protests forced the sultan to abdicate in 1955, temporarily. However, he regained the throne by negotiating with the French to vacate their colonial rule. Upon independence, King Mohammed V ruled Morroco from 1957 until he died in 1961.
