In 2004, Bishop Aaron Blake, Sr. started “Stand Sunday” in the United States, at his church in Brownwood, Texas, as a call to stand up to care for children and families impacted by the child welfare system.
The Christian Alliance for Orphans (CAFO) initiated Stand Sunday to inspire and equip Christians for adoption, foster care, and global orphan care. The movement aims to draw attention to millions of children worldwide who desperately need a family.
The year before, in 2003, in Zambia, a pastor called the local church to respond to the orphan crisis around them, creating the first International Orphan Sunday.
During Stand Sunday services, congregations worldwide commit to prayer and raise awareness about the plight of orphans. Pastors share biblical teachings on adoption and families to consider adopting, fostering, or sponsoring a child in need.
