Saint Catherine’s Day in November honors Saint Catherine of Alexandria (287-305AD). The daughter of the governor of Alexandria, she is considered one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers in Catholicism and a martyr in Orthodox Christianity. She was executed as a teenager, approximately three years after converting to Christianity at 14, by Roman emperor Maxentius for her dedication and after refusing to marry him and stating her spouse was Jesus Christ. Her feast day is the 25th of November.
On this day, unmarried women attend a ball to honor the saint wearing a hat, especially for this occasion.
