Born November 30, 1863, Andrés Bonifacio was a revolutionary leader in the Philippines who led the people toward freedom against the Spanish. Bonifacio proclaimed Filipino independence on August 23, 1896, but was branded a traitor by enemies in the movement. He was executed on May 10, 1897.
Bonifacio Day honors his contributions to the Philippines. He is considered a national hero, and today is a public holiday.
