Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 21, 1833. He devoted his life to peace, science, and literature. Upon his death, December 10, 1896, he willed $9 million to create a prize honoring outstanding scientific achievements, inventions, entrepreneurship, literature, and peace work. These awards are announced each year in October. To win a Nobel Prize is to reach the pinnacle of achievement in one of these areas.
